Abstract
An existing dual-polarization 8- to 9-GHz high-electron mobility transistor (HEMT) low-noise amplifier (LNA) package with an input noise temperature of 15 K has been upgraded with state-of-the-art amplifiers, a lower-loss cooled waveguide input, and a lower operating temperature closed-cycle refrigerator (CCR). The new system exhibits an input noise temperature of 4.4 K. This noise performance is now slightly better than that of the dual-channel maser currently used for radar in the Deep Space Network at DSS 14. This article will describe the changes made to achieve this performance.
