Abstract

An efficient laser transmitter design is proposed using resonant pumping of an erbium-doped fiber amplifier for a free-space optical communications source. Preliminary results are compared with fiber models to understand the influence of various design parameters in order to optimize the power conversion efficiency. An overall efficiency of greater than 20 percent should be realizable based on current designs with optimized pump sources.
