Abstract
Exploration of ocean worlds such as Europa offers potentially important and unique scientific fi ndings. To explore these oceans, technology suitable for the distinct environments must be developed. Europa’s subsurface ocean lies under a large sheet of ice that could be tens of kilometers thick. This uncommon thick ice barrier makes communication to a subsurface probe difficult. In this work, we investigate a magneto-inductive (MI) communication system that has the potential to operate in environments where traditional radio frequency (RF) communication would struggle, such as liquid waters, slush, or higher-temperature ice.
