Abstract

A solar energy instrumentation project was started at Goldstone to support the DSN energy conservation project. The objective is to help provide an adequate technological foundation for supporting a solar energy based facilities design at Goldstone. The lack of historical records of insolation for the Goldstone area required that a program of instrumentation development and solar data recording be started as quickly as possible. Prior NASA-supported work at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory had resulted in the development of a primary absolute cavity radiometer (PACRAD), which was recently accepted as an international standard of irradiance. This report discusses the development of an all-weather, field-worthy solar radiometer based on the PACRAD, a::d describes its calibration stability over a two-year period in the field.
