Abstract

We show that for photon communication, the rate Rg = 1 nat per photon is the rate beyond which one encounters an explosive increase in both the required ratio of peak-to-average signal power and in the required bandwidth expansion. On the basis of these results we conjecture that no practical photon communication system can be designed to operate above 10 nats per photon.
