Abstract
Modern detection systems are increasingly limited in sensitivity by the background thermal photons which enter the receiving system. This paper derives expressions for the fluctuations of detected thermal radiation. Incoherent and heterodyne detection processes are considered. The paper is intended to be tutorial in style.
