Abstract
A hardware version of an optimal convolutional decoder is described. This decoder implements the Viterbi Algorithm for maximum-likelihood decoding of short constraint length convolutional codes. It is capable of decoding at data rates up to a megabit for codes of constraint-length 3, 4, or 5 at code rates ‘2 or %.
