Abstract

This article presents a three-state Markov chain as a model for the errors occurring on the Ground Communications Facility (GCF). An analytic expression for the capacity of the channel in terms of the model parameters is obtained, and comparison is made with the capacity of a binary symmetric channel (BSC) with the same bit-error rate. For a better understanding of the channel's intrinsic behavior and for use in estimating the performances of different error-detecting and errorcorrecting codes, we obtain analytic expressions for three sets of channel parameters. These are the bit error statistics, the block error statistics, and the distribution of burst lengths and error-free (gap) intervals.
